Our Model Home Survey is a one-half-page, two-color paper questionnaire. Description follows below.
Purpose of this Questionnaire
- Gather information about how to improve a home model and its presentation.
- Collect demographics on the types of people who are visiting the model.
- Understand what each demographic group likes least and most about each model.
Uses of the Data
- Modify interior decorating and landscaping.
- Use information on likes and dislikes in the design and layout of future models.
- Adjust the advertising plan to meet the marketing objectives. For example, target zip codes not represented in the model traffic might indicate alternative media should be utilized. Or, if particular types of people seem to like a particular model, the advertising plan may need to be adjusted to attract more of these people.

- Date of visit.
- Overall satisfaction with model
- Eight "attribute" ratings, compared to other model homes.
- Respondent age.
- Household income.
- Respondent zip code.
- Respondent's current housing situation.
The Printing Process
We have a working relationship with a printing specialist. Once we have modified our questionnaire to suit your business, our specialist will handle the printing.
The Questionnaire Distribution and Receipt Process
There are two ways the questionnaires can be distributed. You may choose one of two methods. We highly recommend that whichever method you choose, you not change from that method. The pros and cons of each method are outlined below.
- Method #1 (Handout): When a potential customer enters the model, they should be handed a questionnaire. While the sales representative is doing this, he or she should say something like "here is a questionnaire; we would very much appreciate it if you could give us your opinion of this and leave it with me on your way out. It only takes a minute or two to complete the questionnaire."
- Method #2 (Display): Prominently display the questionnaires in each model. It is crucial that questionnaires always be displayed if this method is chosen.
While method #1 (Handout) is the method we prefer, each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, which are highlighted below:
Method #1 (Handout) will give you a more accurate reading of the true feelings of those who visit each model, because more people will complete and return the questionnaire, which will minimize what we call "non-response bias.". This method makes a positive statement about the builder to the customer; that is, "they care enough about their customers to make sure that I have an opportunity to comment on their model. The main disadvantage to this method is cost related, as many more questionnaires potentially will be distributed.
Method #2 (Display) will give a less accurate reading of the true level of satisfaction felt by visitors, because fewer people will complete it, resulting in a larger "non-response bias." The net impact of this likely will be that the questionnaire will have more of a tendency to be picked up by people who thought the model was very good or very bad. Therefore, the answers you receive will not be as reflective of the true opinions of a random sample of your visitors. The questionnaires may have a tendency to become torn and tattered, which would have a negative impact on the general impression customers have of your business. An advantage is the lower cost of printing the questionnaires, since fewer will be distributed.
Once you have collected a sufficient number of completed questionnaires, you would mail them to us for tabulation and analysis.
The Analysis Process
We will collect completed questionnaires until whatever time cut-off you specify. We will enter all data and provide a report summarizing the quantitative results. All comments will be transcribed verbatim and included in the report. Our price includes one analysis, for any time period you define. If you contract with us to provide reports for different time periods, we will show quantitative trends in the data.
