I was recently employed by a construction company as front desk receptionist. I had been at this job
for almost a year and had done a good job in the position. (The boss had even complimented me on my work.)
The second week in January I was headed home from work for lunch. I was stopped at an intersection when a
pickup truck ran into the back of my car going almost 50 mph. I called the office to inform them that I
would be out for the rest of the day because my car was in bad shape and because I was feeling some back
pain from the accident and needed to see a doctor. I went to a chiropractor that afternoon and it was
confirmed that I had a bad case of whiplash. My hips were out of place and there was a vertebrae in
both my neck & middle back that had twisted due to the way I was sitting and the impact of the accident.
The chiropractor wrote me a doctor's note and told me that I needed to take the rest of the week off of work.
I went into the office and gave the doctor's note to the office manager (as the boss wasn't there) and told
her that I would return the next Monday. The injuries I sustained from the accident caused a lot of pain
to the point that for 3 days that week I could hardly walk.
The following Monday I got up and went into work. The office manager asked me to step into her office and
talk with her. I went in and sat down wondering what the meeting could possibly be about. She said that
my boss had come in on Friday and informed her that I needed to be let go. When I asked her what the
reason for me being let go was she just said, "The days you took off last week were too much.
You can't take that many days off."
I was irritated at that point and asked her how she expected me to come to work when I couldn't even walk.
All she did was shake her head. Then she had the audacity to ask me to stay the rest of the day and work so
I could train the new girl they had hired. Needless to say I didn't stay that day.
