Boss Still Lives in the 1950s

I work for a nonprofit scientific publishing company where my boss is nicknamed Mr. Dithers. Like poor Dagwood, my co-workers and I feel kicked in the rear end by this guy. Mr. Dithers believes his female subordinates should be passive and stupid: he will accept suggestions and ideas only from male co-workers. In addition, he changes policies and procedures on a daily basis, rummages through our computer files, and rearranges and re-labels things in our offices to his liking! If we (female employees) complain, he says the changes are made as part of a "new business paradigm" that we "wouldn't understand."

Mr. Dithers does not believe in raises. After receiving a top-notch review last year, I asked for a raise. His response was "You have just insulted our director. Our director always knows what is best for everyone, and he knows what you should be earning. What you are earning is fine." Talk about condescending! A little research on my part discovered that we are paid $5,000/yr less than our competitors.

Never mind. He still insists that we must be "humble and modest" and accept what we are given. After 2.5 years of this BS, I am actively looking for a new job and have tried to be quiet about it. Unfortunately, Mr. Dithers found out this week and freaked: "How could you look for another job! This job should be your career! People who work here stay here for life!"

The scary thing about this guy is that he is young, around 40, and wears 1950s glasses in addition to having a 1950s business attitude. I hate to think what he will behave like when he reaches retirement age!
